The changes going on here at Farrand Farms are remarkable. Since we grow nearly all the plants we offer, each day welcomes new surprises.
We have quite a few new and exciting plants this year. How about a truly BLACK Petunia? Yes, we have Black Velvet, Phantom, and Pinstripe (see our What's New section on the website for pictures). Farrand Farms also has plenty of your favorites from last year, too (remember Picasso - Lime green and pink?). Yeah, you bet we have them.
How about herbs? Choose from one of the widest selections offered in Kansas City. This year, we even have the difficult to find Bay Leaf. You're going to be pleased with the selections for your garden.
Have the kids help you pick out a special Heirloom tomato variety to plant along side your own favorite variety. Cherokee Purple, Brandywine, or even Sweet 100 Cherry tomatoes are child favorites. Farrand Farms has nearly eighty varieties of tomatoes and peppers alone!
Our perennial selection has improved too. Mid-April will be the best time to start planting our quality perennial plants. Sabine, our assistant grower, has even planned to set up an area just for the Perennial of the Year winners from the past ten seasons.
Farrand Farms also has a great Rose selection. Nearly 110 varieties - of course we have Double Knock Outs! David Austin old English style and tree roses are looking grand at the start!
Gosh, there is so much going on right now. The greenhouses are filled with joy, color and hope! You'll be so glad you came to visit. Bring the kids and the entire family for a time of learning and sharing! I have five kids of my own, and I love having them learn and share along with me.
Be sure to check our Recommended Planting Schedule on this site before you start. You'll be glad you did, and you'll know when and what to plant. Bring a friend who's never been to Farrand Farms and introduce them to the same fine staff you'll recognize from years past. Your friends will absolutely love you for sharing the experience of Farrand Farms. We know we are different and are confident you and your friends will be delighted. Come on in and enjoy Springtime!

Now's the time to grab the kids and grandkids and get started on a new season. Kids love planting, especially with Grandpa and Grandma. Mom and Dad, this is a great opportunity for learning and sharing.
Children love planting seeds. Use an old or new pot, add some premium potting mix and plant some fresh seeds. Set the children up for success by choosing seeds that offer quick results and rapid response. Leaf lettuce, spinach and radishes are fast and easy. The kids will have fun and you'll all enjoy the results.
Have the kids help in the garden too. They can help you work in Cotton Burr Compost just before planting. Explain the importance of adding organic material back into the soil to replace what we've taken out in the previous seasons. It's a great time to learn together.
Of course it's just about the right time to show them how to plant carrots, lettuce, radish, broccoli, cabbage, onions and potatoes. The kids are always more interested in eating what they have helped plant. Strawberries are always fun for the young ones and are extremely easy.
Bring them along with you to Farrand Farms, and help them choose some happy and smiling pansies or violas. Adding a pot of colorful pansies or just adding a few in the vegetable garden help to make the experience more cheerful. The kids will always remember where the flowers they helped plant are!
Farrand Farms is full of fun this time of year. Things are changing each and every day. You'll appreciate the fresh smell of spring as you wander through the greenhouse. You'll feel great here after the long, dark winter. Come on over and see what we have going on for you. We've been growing here since the early 1920's and always appreciate the support you show us. Local is good!
Here are a few simple reminders:
1. Repot those indoor plants now. They are just beginning to initiate new growth. Time to get them in the next larger pot size and fresh soil. We have all that you need to make it a success.
2. Reseed the lawn now. The earlier the better. Seeding after April 1 rarely works well.
3. About mid-March is the time to get Crabgrass Preventer down. Use Hummert's Dimension for the best control. We have plenty of it!
4. It's too early to start your tomatoes from seed. The third week of March is usually about the earliest time, but you'll lose no time even seeding then indoors if you start as late as April 5th. We have all of the supplies you'll need. We have copies of our Planting Guide in our store. Pick up a copy the next time you are in to make sure you are within right time frame.
I'll be posting to my blog every two weeks now that the new season is here. Please let me know if you have any particular questions and I'll do my best to help. I'm excited about this spring! Farrand Farms is ready, and don't forget to get the little ones involved.
