Mid-Winter's Dream

January is always a tough month on gardeners. It's far too early to plant, but just the right time to dream a little. Enjoy your time looking through your new vegetable and flower variety lists and catalogues and plant a few new ideas for your garden. Spring is closer than we think!
Here's a few ideas and things that may help you avoid 'Spring Fever': 1. Repot your indoor plants. Indoor plants are just getting ready to initiate new spring growth. Remove the plants from their pot and loosen the soil around the roots, shake it off and repot them in fresh lightweight soil. Fertilize them and watch them grow. Fresh soil and fresh nutrition will inspire new roots and healthy growth.
2. Fertilize the lawn. Late January and early February is an ideal time to apply Hummert's Winterizer with Nutri-Life. Yes, you can apply it even with snow on the ground. Over the next few weeks, snow or rain will settle it in and the lawn will take off with renewed vigor as soon as the weather improves.
3. Here's a fun idea: Use any pot you have - new or used. Fill it with fresh lightweight soil and plant some radish or lettuce seeds (any leaf lettuce will do). Place it near a bright window and it will grow fast and tender. Kids and grandkids love doing this. Make sure they help!
4. Poinsettias. If you want to keep yours looking great, keep it moist and offer it fertilization once a month. Easy and done!
Our store will reopen for spring 2011 on Wednesday, February 23rd. We are here working, so feel free to call me at (816) 353-2312 if there is anything you need or want to ask us about. One word of caution: We at Farrand Farms believe it is far too early to begin seeding your tomatoes and other warm weather vegetable garden plants. Very late March is usually the earliest time to think about starting those favorites.
I'll write again during the last week of February. Stay warm and cozy and dream BIG!
