Summer Fun!

Keith @ Thursday, June 30, 2011

The trial gardens are looking and producing very well this season. At Farrand Farms, we trial each and every variety of tomato that we sell. We also plant a multitude of other herbs and vegetables just for fun too.

The trial gardens are free to tour and enjoy throughout the growing season. Please feel free to walk through anytime during regular hours. We'll be happy to discuss what we are doing, should you have any questions.

The famous Farrand Farms Tomato Fair is only about 1 month away (that's a great reason to visit the trial gardens). Larry Moore, Toby Tobin, Jasper Mirabile and many others will all be here and pleased to answer any questions that you may have. We have many fun activities planned for you and the kids. Tell your friends it starts at 9 am on Saturday, August 6th. Any tomato or salsa entry must be in between 9 and 11:30 am on August 6th. You can also bring your vegetable bounty to share with those in need at the Harvesters Drop off table. Don't miss this great event! A suggested charitable donation of $3 for ages 13 and older benefits the Saint Luke's Women Heart Center.

Summer questions and observations: Lots of folks are asking why tomato plants, summer squashes, and even green beans are aborting or dropping their blossoms and not setting fruit. Under rapidly and constant changing temperatures, plants do not pollinate well. When not pollinated, the blooms fall off. May was not kind (too wet and cool for too long), so plants didn't 'set' well. They should really be setting well now. Keep the garden watered and fed well and you should soon be reaping a fair reward.

Do this right now if you are growing fall blooming mums: Use your scissors and cut mum plants back by half. No need to be careful . . . mums take it well. By cutting them back now, you will inspire nearly twice the blooms, keep them at a great height for the greatest fall presentation and enjoy awesome fall color.

Here at Farrand Farms, we've been very busy growing a fresh selection of colorful plants that will help you fill in or finish your summer gardens. It's also a great time to plant a 'show piece' pot or two for your entry. Color is great and so is the selection. Vinca, Lantana and Angelonia love our hot summer days.

See you at the Tomato Fair on August 6th.

Water well!

Keith
