Do it NOW!

Keith @ Monday, September 13, 2010

Now is the time to get it done! Our lawns have been brutalized, our gardens have suffered and we're all worn out by the August heat.
Lawns: September is the perfect time to get your grass repairs done and seeded. The ideal preparation will include cutting the grass on the shortest lawnmower setting, verticutting and reseeding with Fall Fertilizer. It is easier to start a lawn in the fall because the temperatures are cooler, rain is usually more plentiful and root development is fantastic!
Farrand Farms recommends overseeding both sunny and shady lawns with Toby Tobin's favorite lawn seed- Hummert's RTF Fescue/Blue Blend. We also carry Hummert's lawn fertilizers including Fall Starter, Starter and Winterizer. All are blended with 'Nutri-Life' root development enhancers to help your grass take off in spring.
Fall Color: Many of you have been asking why the Mums are slower blooming this year. Because of the extreme heat in August, they are a bit delayed. The good news is that they have more blooms and will last longer - even in November given the opportunity. Farrand Farm's mums are awesome this season and we have a great selection.
Fall Asters are blooming now too. Pansies are ready to be tucked in. A great thing about Pansies is that they will continue to bloom into December, go right through even the coldest of winters and will reward you with spectacular color again in the spring. Don't forget we also have the hard to find Montauk Daisies.
Fall Bulbs: Crocus, Grape Hyacynths, Tulips, Daffodils and many other fall bulbs are arriving this week.
Pumpkins, Guords, Indian Corn, Cornstalks and Straw Bales will be ready for you by Friday, Sept. 17.
Hint #1: Fall planted perennials often gain a full year's advantage on spring planted perennials. It's really all about the roots! We still have a nice selection of perennials - the Autumn Ferns are remarkable!
Hint #2: Tired of those Japanese beetles coming inside your home to spend the winter? NOW is the time to apply Spectracide Triazicide around your house. Applying a spray about 4 feet up from the ground is all it takes to keep these unwanted guests away.
The fall is the perfect time for enjoying the outdoors. It's not work, it's fun!
