Preparing for fall

Keith @ Monday, August 16, 2010

Let me ask you . . . . is it right that school starts today? Summer has nearly disappeared. The good news is we can once again get ready for one of the best planting times of the entire year.

Do this right now:
1. Fertilize the strawberries and any other fruit bearing shrubs bushes, vines and trees. They are determining next year's crop right now. If they are fed well now, your returns next season will improve dramatically. Please do not delay - late feeding encourages late tender growth that you'll want to avoid because it can actually hinder a plant preparing itself for winter.
2. Fertilize roses. In fact fertilize all established perennials plants for the same reasons mentioned above.
Note: Dry granular fertilizers like Zoom 5-10-5 (or a balanced granular general purpose fertilizer) are best. They last and feed over the longest period of time. We recommend avoiding liquid fertilizers as they diminish in the soil very quickly.

Lawn: If nut grass (nutsedge) is a problem for you, use NuFarm 'ProSedge' right now and through mid-September. Always use a spreader sticker (surfactant) when applying Prosedge. The spreader sticker will make the spray stick to nutsedge and allow it to give you the best result. Use luke warm water to dissolve the spray, but don't spray when temperatures are over 90 degrees.

It's also time to divide and renew your iris beds. Bone meal is a great natural and organic food to add. At Farrand Farms, we'll have new varieties of iris you may wish to add. We are expecting them soon.

Our mums are outstanding this year! They are huge and very well budded. Save a few dollars if you buy before Sept. 1. The large 2 gallon containers can be purchased now for only $7.50 each. After Sept. 1, they will return to the regular $8.95 price of the past three seasons.

Things to look forward to in the next 2 or 3 weeks: Fall bulbs (i.e., tulips, crocus, daffodils and hyacinths). We'll have a great selection of pansies. We'll soon be stocking fresh grass seed and fertilizer to help you get that perfect lawn next spring. Of course, we'll also have cornstalks, pumpkins for all of your fall decorating needs.

All of our birdbaths, fountains, statuaries and pottery are 25% off
through Oct 1.

Let us help you start the fall season right. We look forward to seeing you here!
